June to September is the best time for a trip into Kyrgyzstan's mountains. July and August are the only months when the high lakes and passes above 3,000 m are reliably open; June and September are quieter, with colder nights. Spring and autumn suit Issyk-Kul, Karakol and the foothills.

Kyrgyzstan month by month
January to March: winter. High passes and lake camps are closed. Karakol has skiing.
April and May: snow melts and the lower valleys turn green. Unpaved mountain roads are muddy and the high camps are still closed. Issyk-Kul, Karakol and Altyn-Arashan work from late spring.
June: the high roads open during the month, but snow can linger on the passes and some yurt camps only go up in the second half.
July and August: peak season. The high lakes and passes are open, shepherds are on the summer pastures, and the days are warm. Nights at 3,000 m are still cold, and Bishkek can pass 35 °C.
September: golden light, fewer people, cold nights. The first half is reliable for the high lakes; after mid-September the roads can get tricky and camps start to close.
October: fine for Issyk-Kul and Karakol. High passes may close with the first snow.
November and December: the camps are gone. This is when eagle hunters actually hunt; summer eagle shows are demonstrations.
How many days do you need?
Five days is enough for Song-Kol and the south shore of Issyk-Kul. Eight days adds Karakol, the Altyn-Arashan hike and a day in Ala-Archa. Two weeks lets you add Naryn, Kel-Suu and Tash-Rabat in one loop.
Which months for which places
